business

The Business department seeks to equip students with the skills they will need in whatever organisation they are a part of in the future.  From team communication and collaboration to financial understanding, marketing and the ability to analyse and dissect different businesses in order to make judgments and recommendations.

Our curriculum in Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth

Business theory is taught through the use of case studies, from firms that are household names to ones you may never have heard of, across a range of different industries.

In your first year, you will develop a sound understanding of the foundations of Business including the different types of business, the importance of stakeholders, and crucially how main functions of any Business make decisions.

Equipped with this foundation understanding, the second year focuses on strategy: planning for the future, navigating challenges and achieving goals within an ever-changing global context.

Enrichment

IFS Student Investor Challenge is a UK wide investment game for students with a top prize of a trip to New York.  Teams invest £100,000 of virtual money in a set of shares and other investment instruments across two portfolios which go up and down in value in line with share price movements.  The challenge gives students a feel for stock market trading and investing, as well providing insight into the connection between events and share prices.

The Young Enterprise Company Programme runs throughout the academic year.  Students find out what it’s really like to set up and run a business.  They make all the decisions about their company, from deciding on the company name and product to creating a business plan, managing the company finances, selling to the public at trade fairs, to ultimately winding up the company and paying their taxes.  All this takes place with the support of a volunteer Business Adviser who brings a wealth of business knowledge and expertise.
