Swimarathon - March 2018

Congratulations to everyone involved in a tremendously successful Ashcombe 2018 Swimarathon.

A clash with an important Surrey competition meant that a couple of candidates for the speed team were unavailable. Our Speed Team (Huw Morgan, Ben Sears, Dominic Morgan, Ed Moran, Angus Fitzgerald and Hester Fitgerald) completed an exhausting 100 laps! It was an exciting finish with just a few seconds to spare!

A fantastic effort from all our swimmers clocked up an overall total of 217 laps of 50m. Even more impressive is the total amount of money raised: over £500 pledged so far which will all go to charities: £72 to the Rotary Charity Fund and the remainder split between Ashcombe's Romania Fund, Ashcombe's Uganda Project and The Royal Marsden Hospital. Now we hope that the swimming effort is matched by the same dedication to collecting this money.

House-points will be awarded for participation and fund-raising in each year group.

A huge thank you to all who took part; there was a wonderful atmosphere on poolside and it was fantastic to see the students encouraging and supporting each other throughout. Almost every year group across the school was represented, very well done indeed!

Guildford Cathedral - March 2018

Year 11 RS pupils spent an exciting day at Guildford Cathedral attending the 'God and the big bang' conference which gave pupils the opportunity to explore, discover, discuss and debate the compatibility of science and faith. The day included a talk from a prominent member of the scientific faith community, a practical science demonstration, which included extracting our DNA from our saliva, and a question and answer session. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all pupils and should benefit them in their upcoming GCSE exams.

Charities Week - February 2018

The Lower 6th at The Ashcombe School organised the annual Charities Week extravaganza in support of the school's charities, Build Africa, Royal Marsden and the schools link with Romania.

This entailed staff and students dressing up all week to set daily themes and performing live on stage in the Hall to a large audience.

Along with the brilliant Upper and Lower School Talents Shows, this year as usual there were many contributions from our talented members of staff. The technical team were brilliant and they succeeded in making each lunchtime event a master class in lighting and special effects. Photography by Peter Wild Year 10

Ski Trip to France - February 2018

67 students and 9 staff departed Ashcombe on Friday 9th February heading for the Alps. After a long journey we arrived in snowy Morzine ' a tranquil alpine town in Eastern France. Getting 67 pupils through ski boot fitting wasn't easy and watching novices try on ski boots for the first time was definitely entertaining.

The ski resort of Morzine stretches to ' Les Gets' up to the peaks of Chamosseire and Pointe de Nyon. The vast resort was full of a series of blue, red and black runs with most being open due to the incredible amount of snow for the season. There were enough students for 3 beginner groups and 3 groups ranging from intermediate to expert.

All the students had a fantastic time and were an absolute delight to take on the trip. It was really lovely to see lots of students try something new and others develop their skills in something they are so passionate about. Many thanks to all the staff who gave up their half term to be involved!
